Who was Bernadette Soubirous?

Bernadette Soubirous was a French peasant girl who is best known for her visions of the Virgin Mary in 1858 in Lourdes, France. Born on January 7, 1844, in Lourdes, she experienced a series of apparitions while gathering firewood near the Massabielle grotto. During these visions, she reported seeing a lady who later identified herself as the Immaculate Conception.

Her experiences sparked significant religious interest and devotion, leading to the establishment of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, which has become a major pilgrimage site for millions of Catholics. Bernadette was later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1933. Her life and the events at Lourdes have had a lasting impact on Catholic spirituality, particularly concerning themes of faith, healing, and the role of Mary in the lives of believers. Bernadette passed away on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35.
