Blessed Ye who is not offended by Me
Blessed Ye who is not offended by Me. In Matthew 11:6 and Luke 7:23, Jesus says:
“And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
This statement comes in the context of John the Baptist sending his disciples to ask Jesus if He is “the one who is to come” or if they should expect someone else. After responding to John’s disciples by pointing to the miracles He has performed, Jesus adds this beatitude.
Meaning and Context
- Offense in the Context of Faith: The phrase “offended by me” in this context refers to taking offense or stumbling over the way Jesus fulfilled His role as the Messiah, which might have been unexpected for many. Jesus was not the political or military leader that some anticipated, but instead, He came as a humble servant, performing miracles, preaching repentance, and ultimately suffering and dying on the cross. Some might stumble or take offense at this unexpected form of the Messiahship.
- Blessing: Jesus pronounces a blessing on those who can accept Him and His way without stumbling or taking offense. This blessing is for those who, despite any doubts or misunderstandings, still trust in Him and do not turn away because of unmet expectations or the challenging aspects of His teachings.
Application
This saying invites believers to reflect on their own faith journey, especially when faced with aspects of Jesus’ life or teachings that might be difficult to understand or accept. It encourages a trust in Jesus that transcends doubts or offense, recognizing the blessedness in embracing Him fully, even when His ways are challenging or counter to human expectations.
